Something About the Moon

So let me start by making a couple of corrections.  First, I said in my Saturday morning post, Spring Cleaning, that there was a full moon Friday night.  You know, the one I said must have put a spell on Lon to cause to help me clean the garage?  Apparently, there wasn't a full moon, but there was something special about it this weekend.

And that brings me to my second correction.  If I've ever said there is anything more beautiful than what I saw Saturday night in Neptune Beach, then I was wrong.  In Spring Cleaning, I wrote   that we were going to the beach so Lon could shoot the moon.  I made light of it, but now I know why it was so important that he got the shot. It wasn't just any moon.  It was a supermoon! It was so amazing, I had to come home and do some research on it.   Turns out, it's an historic event (click here to read about the Vernal Equinox & Supermoon.)

For the first time in 18 years, the moon was its closest to the Earth and at its fullest.  Apparently, everyone new about it but me because thousands of people lined the beach to watch it make its entrance over the horizon. Just imagine a big red ball rising out of the depths of the sea.

Here are some of Lon's pictures of this amazing event.  By the way, he hated his shots, which means he won't be posting them anywhere. But they were good enough for DHM.  :-)

The crowd started cheering just as the moon came over the horizon.
The next three pictures came out dark, but they are close to what it looked like as the moon rose higher.
About an hour later.
