Blossoming Spring Cleaning

It was such a beautiful day on Saturday that we combined cleaning the garage with a little gardening.  Ok, so there was more gardening than garage cleaning.  Lon and I did a little shopping before we got started on the garage. Every where we went, we saw people buying plants and flowers for their yards.
Read more below and see photos.

We thought it would be a great project for Austin and Kingston while we were dealing with the garage.  We also wanted to get Austin out of the house.  Click here to see why.

We had two big planters that we hadn't used in years that were perfect for planting some flowers. Check out some of the pictures below.

We succeeded in getting Austin out of the house.  Don't mind the garage, it's a blossoming spring cleaning project.  :-)

It ended up being an Austin - Daddy project.

King was excited...until his friends showed up.

We bought some begonias, impatiens, marigolds and a purple one...just cause it's purple.

I wanted these two palms for the front door, but we don't get enough sunlight.  We're planning to plant them in bigger pots next weekend and put them on the patio. The flowers don't need much sunlight,  so they will stay on the front.  By the way, the palms are also "cold-hardy," which we found out means they will survive through winter.

These are some houseplants we are trying to save.  The one in the red cup was Kingston's class project, which he gave me for Mother's Day last year.  So cute.  He still waters it.  Lon is planting them in the terracotta pots.

Austin mapped out her design and started digging.

The houseplants are putting down roots in their new home.

The marigolds and "purple" get a little drink before making their debut.  Interesting fact that sold Lon on the marigolds.  They keep bugs away.  If anyone knows a plant that keeps frogs away, call me.  :-)

The begonias are beautiful on the front porch.

Finished product.  Hopefully, Austin will take care of them this summer and watch them grow.

Here's what I did while they planted the flowers.  This is a wardrobe box full of my shoes that were supposed to go to Goodwill months ago.  I couldn't let go.  This was an emotional day for me.

These are the ones I kept.  JK!!  :-)  These are just the boxes.  I kept some to store other shoes. The rest went to the recycle bin.  We ended up taking three boxes of clothes, shoes and books to Goodwill before heading to the beach.  We're hoping to have the garage completed by next weekend (fingers crossed).  Think I can get the moon to sprinkle some more magic dust?  :-)
